Handsworth Hub Y7-Y10 Curriculum

At Bents Green School – Handsworth Hub, we are proud to offer a personalised, inclusive, and aspirational curriculum designed to meet the diverse needs of our students. Our curriculum is built around three levels of support and two academic pathways, ensuring every child receives the education and care they need to thrive.


Our Academic Pathways 

Please see below details of how our academic pathways are implemented to support our students through their school journey. 

Independence Pathway

Through our Independence Pathway students receive:

  • Full access to mainstream Handsworth Grange lessons and GCSE options.
  • Academic support sessions in the Bents Green Hub.
  • Phonics support via Read Write Inc Fresh Start (as required).
  • Sensory and social, emotional, and communication interventions.
  • PSHE/RSE delivered through mainstream curriculum.
  • One off-site visit per half-term.

Foundation Pathway

Through our Foundation Pathway students receive:

  • Access to mainstream Handsworth Grange lessons in Maths, English, Science, and PSHE, as a minimum.
  • AQA Entry Level Maths and English (if required) + 1–2 GCSE options.
  • Timetabled sessions in the Bents Green Hub.
  • A Preparation for Adulthood carousel (Years 7–10).
  • Access to additional mainstream options as appropriate.
  • Phonics, sensory, and emotional support interventions.

Our Support Model

Please see below details of how our support model is implemented to support our students through their school journey. 

Wave One - Univeral Support

Through our Wave One approach, students will receive support through:

  • Quality first teaching for pupils expected to achieve 4+ GCSEs.
  • Trauma-informed strategies.
  • Sensory breaks, small groups, high staffing, breakout spaces.

Wave Two - Targeted Support

Through our Wave Two approach, students will receive support through:

  • Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
  • Personalised timetables and non-class-based activities.
  • Sensory movement breaks and emotional literacy support.
  • Regular reflection and review with staff and students.

Wave Three – Specialist Support

Through our Wave Two approach, students will receive support through:

  • Speech and Language Therapy.
  • CAMHS and Ryegate referrals.
  • Educational Psychology input.
  • 1:1 and 2:1 support.
  • Personalised workspaces and safe spaces.
  • Alternative provisions and tailored SRE.
