Westfield Hub Y11 Curriculum

The Bents Green Hub at Westfield School aims to provide an Autism-friendly environment within the mainstream setting of Westfield School. For the right students, the Bents Green Hub offers the best of both worlds; an ASD-friendly environment together with opportunities to benefit both socially and academically from the facilities, curriculum and curriculum expertise offered by a mainstream school.

The Hub provides targeted support for students across Key Stages 3 and 4. We aim to provide a safe and nurturing environment where students can work towards the academic qualifications that will enable them to reach their full potential. We also provide individual and group interventions which address students’ social communication difficulties in order to help children develop friendships, participate in social and enrichment activities and learn skills for adulthood. These include developing independent travel skills, learning how to keep themselves safe and developing skills needed for independent living.

Students will spend a proportion of their timetable within the mainstream setting accessing a broad and balanced curriculum taught by subject specialist teachers and supported by Bents Green teaching assistants.

During Key Stage 3 (Y7, Y8 and Y9) students are expected to attend Maths, English, Science, ICT and PE lessons in the mainstream environment. During KS3 students can also access humanities, languages, technology, and expressive arts lessons which are taught within the mainstream setting. A varied timetable is promoted by staff during KS3 as this increases the options available to our learners at KS4. The reminder of students timetable will be delivered in the Hub. These lessons will focus on personal and social development, delivering a curriculum consisting of Personal, Social and Health Education and Preparation for Adulthood. Trained staff are also able to deliver specific interventions aimed to address students’ individual needs.

During phase 4 (Y10 and Y11) students will follow their own personal pathways, studying for their GCSE’s within the mainstream. They will also continue to access the lessons in the Hub which support their personal and social development.

Religious Education

At Bents Green School, all pupils are encouraged to learn about the beliefs of others, in addition to their own, as part of the religious education national curriculum. Parents/carers have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of the religious education curriculum and are not required to provide a reason for doing so.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

At Bents Green School, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) plays a vital role in nurturing our students’ well-being, independence, and social understanding. Rooted in our core values of kindness, respect, unconditional positive regard, and celebrating individualism, our PHSE/RSE curriculum is designed to empower every student with autism and communication needs at Bents Green School to develop meaningful relationships, positive self-identity, and essential life skills through health education. This curriculum supports our vision to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where every student feels valued and can thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.

More information on our RSE curriculum can be found within our RSE Policy. Each year parents/carers will be consulted on any changes to the RSE curriculum/policy, through an annual online consultation. Parents/carers have the right to request that their child is excused from all or part of the RSE curriculum. Any requests must be made in writing to the school’s Head of Curriculum.
